National Volunteer Week - Rob Hogg

April 17, 2024

During National Volunteer Week, HEO will be sharing stories of some of the incredible volunteers we are so lucky to have involved in hockey in Eastern Ontario. This story features Rob Hogg, a coach with Sledge Hockey of Eastern Ontario.

Q: What volunteer roles do you hold within the SHEO? Can you briefly describe what you do in these roles.

A: Coach-organize the years practice plans, run practices with assistant coach, coach during games.

Couch Mentor-help new coaches run practices, offer guidance when requested

Tournament Committee- find teams, create schedule, find officials, be available all weekend for the tournament

Try a sled volunteer- assist with organizing ice time, help participants “sled-up”

Past roles within SHEO: Board member (Hockey Operations)-work with LTAD to assist athletes reach their potential, referee, & volunteer

Q: How did you get involved with volunteering?

A: A friend of mine was already coaching the Ottawa Elite Team and suggested I should help. I had a blast and met some of the people already involved (players and volunteers) and they asked me to join them next year.

The following year I became the coach and attended weekly ice times, now I’m addicted to Sledge hockey!

Q: What has been the most rewarding part about volunteering?

A: The most rewarding part of volunteering with SHEO is seeing the growth in the players on and off the ice, being around for 14 years, I have witnessed some players who acquired their disability move up to the National Para Team and become an assistant captain. Others are getting ready to enter university.

Q: Why do you think others should get involved in volunteering?

A: It is very fulfilling and rewarding.
